Motivational Interviewing Fundamentals

This class offers a comprehensive introduction to the principles and techniques of Motivational Interviewing (MI), an evidence-based communication method designed to foster collaboration and empowerment. Ideal for professionals in healthcare, counseling, social work, and education, the course equips participants with the skills to guide clients through ambivalence and inspire positive behavioral change.

Through a blend of interactive lectures, role-playing exercises, and real-life scenarios, students will learn how to effectively engage clients, evoke motivation, and support goal-setting. Key concepts include the spirit of MI, the stages of change model, and core techniques such as open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summarizing (OARS).

By the end of the course, participants will gain confidence in applying MI techniques to enhance client relationships, promote change, and achieve better outcomes.

No prior experience with MI is required.​​

Approved for LPC, LMFT, LADC, LCSW

Deana Tharp

Deana is the Chief Clinical Compliance Officer at Lighthouse Behavioral Wellness Centers.  During her long tenure at Lighthouse she has served in direct clinical and administrative roles.  She has worked extensively with individuals with trauma issues, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation.  She has been a Licensed Professional Counselor in both Oklahoma and Texas since 1995.  She received her master's degree in counseling at the University of North Texas in 1991.  Deana has been a certified trainer in AMSR since 2021.
